2018 AFFI Daniel J. Bower Commitment To Excellence Award

AFFI Honor Guard Daniel J. Bower Commitment To Excellence Award wa presented to 5th District Drill Captain Shawn Collins for John (Kevin) Hauber of Buffalo Grove Local #3177 who could not be in attendance, as he is on hospice. During Kevin's difficult battle with cancer, he made sure that he was available to make drills or activations, even when he struggled with his own health issues.  Kevin is truly a role model for all of us to follow in doing  “Whatever It Takes”.

Sadly, on January 27, 2018 Brother John (Kevin) Hauber lost his battle with cancer.  May he rest in eternal peace.

Letter of thanks

Commander Bruno,

I would like to say thank you and the AFFI Honor Guard, from the bottom of my heart, and my families, for the love and support everyone from the AFFI Honor Guard showed my family, myself, Kevin’s daughters and wife, and most importantly Kevin! My family and friends were beyond impressed with the incredible send off for Kevin there was both at the wake and funeral. It was a tough two days, especially seeing everyone walk up in their Class As because I knew what that meant. So I would like to apologize if I came across rude at any point. When seeing everyone walk up I would get choked up and could not talk at times. The emotions would come flooding in and then disappear. Kevin’s daughters were able to see the respect and love everyone had for Kevin and I think there could not have been a better way for them to be Proud of their Dad. The AFFI Honor Guard truly made a lasting impression on ALL of Kevin’s co-workers, friends, and most importantly, our family! I am really going to miss my brother, especially coming into work and not seeing him occasionally coming off shift. We had our differences but I loved my brother. But the members of the AFFI Honor Guard has definitely made it easier. I am very proud to be a Member of this Honor Guard.

Thank you all, Jim Hauber and family

23rd Annual IL Fallen FF Memorial & Medal of Honor Ceremony

The Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois Honor Guard was present to honor 4 families who's loved ones were honored in Springfield on May 10, 2016. The Duty Death Gold Badge is an award of Honor given to the family of a firefighter deceased in, or as a result of, the performance of duty. Those Honorees were:

Firefighter/Paramdeic Daniel V. Capuano, Chicago Fire Department
Firefighter/Paramedic Fidel G. Serrano Jr. Chicago Fire Department (2012)
Firefighter/Paramedic Mark A. Zielinski, Sr., Matteson Fire Department
Chief Kenneth J. Lehr, Mendora Fire Protection District

Congratulations also go out to all of those who were honored for going above and beyond in their call of duty, as they were honored at the Medal of Honor Ceremony as well. A huge thank you to the Girl Scouts, who have joined us to honor these families today.

The Girl Scout Honor Guard for Fallen Fire Fighters

Lauren Constantino is looking to ask Girl Scout's to become Members of and participating in the Girl Scout Honor Guard for Fallen Fire Fighters (GSHGFFF). The GSHGFFF is the Girl Scout Gold Award Project of me, Gold Award Candidate Lauren Constantino. The Gold Award is the highest award a Girl can get in Girl Scouting.

I have a special relationship with the Gurnee Fire Dept. because my father, Russell S. Constantino, was a Fire Fighter/Paramedic there for 20 years until he passed away due to an active duty death in November 2009. My father had helped to form the GFD Honor Guard, served with the AFFI (State of IL) Fire Fighter Honor Guard, and participated in the IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial Ceremony in Colorado Springs, CO. I was even at some of those ceremonies, including making an appearance at only three weeks of age in 1999 at the Illinois Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial, and of course when my father’s name was added to the IAFF Memorial Wall in 2010. So I will always hold a special place in my heart for the Fire Service, the FF Honor Guard, and the families of fallen fire fighters. In the true spirit of the brother- and sisterhood of the fire service family, the members of the Gurnee Fire Dept, Local 3598, and the GFD Honor Guard, have graciously thrown their support behind me in this first-of-its-kind Girl Scout Honor Guard for Fallen Fire Fighters. She held her first meeting and training at Gurnee Fire Station 2 with the regularly scheduled Honor Guard Drill.  Below are some pictures from the event.
